Tiberias (named after the Roman emperor Tiberius who ruled from 14-37 AD) is the largest city around the Kineret lake (Sea of Galilee). Located on its western shore, its location produces a beautiful view of the entire Kineret lake and the Golan heights.
The surroundings of Tiberias were well populated throughout the centuries, and it was the center of a large fishing industry, it’s lake waters remarkably rich in fish. Numerous trade routes intersected at the lake. Of all ancient towns around only Tiberias still exists today, but the remains of these old cities are kept until today. One example is “SOSITA” which is a must if you visit the eastern side of the LAKE and is located on a mountain. When you get to the top, you will see the remains of roman architecture and a breathtaking view – don’t forget the camera!
Tiberias has a special Religious meaning for many Christians. Tradition claims Jesus was baptized here and so, many Christian pilgrims annually visit this holy site to be baptized. The Gospels tell of many episodes having happened there, including the meeting of James, John and Simon, the miraculous Draft of Fish, the Multiplication of the Loaves and the Walking on the Waters.
Tiberias is a holy city in Judaism, one of the most important centers of Jewish studies and culture. After the destruction of the Temple, during the 2nd and 3rd centuries the Sanhedrin (Jewish council) moved to Tiberias.
Today Tiberias is a popular holiday getaway for many. The town has many hotels, hostels, restaurants (good FISH restaurants) and spa’s. Around the Kineret lake are several Kibbutz’s and villages, many of them offer private rooms and cabins near the water. A famous water park called “Luna-GAL” is located on the eastern side and is very recommended if you bring the kids along. If you are in the sporty mood, you can rent a speed boat and water-ski. The weather in summer is hot, but at around 16:00 pm, a cool western breeze blows and the feeling is heavenly.
