Mitzpe Ramon is a quiet southern little town with several special gifts of nature, fresh air, wild life and 2 huge crates. According to geological theory, over the course of time, cracks in the earth’s surface were eroded away along the ridges of the Negev highland mountains. The great force from tremendous floods of winter eventually washed away these ridges and left only huge open spaces. These cirques are often called craters (Although they were not formed by meteors nor by volcanic activity). Geologists refer to them by their Hebrew name “Machtesh”.
40 km long, 9 km wide and 400 m deep is the size of the Ramon Crate. The little town of Mizpe Ramon, is located on a western cliff of that crate.
Founded after the establishment of the State of Israel in the 1950′s, the residents of Miztpe Ramon are mainly employed in the tourist industry that has developed over the last few decades. Ramon Crate has been declared a geological park, and is slated to be preserved for future generations.

Prism Creek
Activities:
Most activities that you’ll find have to do with the unique habitat around:
- The prism creek (also called: Haminsara, the Carpentry) is located in the center of the Ramon Crate. It is a low hill made up of black prismatic rocks, and interestingly, the rectangular pipes on the side of the hill are made of the same sort of sand found on beaches. As such, this is the only place in the world where prisms made of heated sand turned into liquid which, in cooling naturally, formed rectangular and hexagonal prisms.
- Tracking through the large crate and the small crate.
- You can rent a Jeep tour. Expect breathtaking view and pleasant encounters with curious wild animals around.
- Ramon zoo is an excellent opportunity to see all the typical wild life in the area. In the zoo you can see the Israeli snakes, turtles, porcupines, lizards, rodents and more.
- Alpaca ranch.
Nightlife:
It’s not the strong part of Mizpe Ramon
, but you can seat in a cafe, or go to a restaurant or rent a night jeep tour. There is a pub or two in the small industrial area half km away.
Accommodation:
The hotel RAMON INN is located in the town center, built in 1993 and offers a cozy atmosphere. It’s a very nice hotel but not cheap. You can rent rooms in the town for about 75$ a night, and even private homes for as low as 120$.
