Haifa

Haifa, the third largest city in Israel, lies on the western slope of Mount Carmel, descending to the Mediterranean shore. The location of the city offers magnificent views of the sea and Mount Carmel area.

Haifa is home to 250,000 inhabitants, members of five different religions, living side by side in harmony, peace and mutual respect. A rich tapestry of contrasts and colors, varying cultures, and ethnic groups makes up the fabric of life in Haifa. Secular, Religious and Ultra-Orthodox Jews live side by side with Christians, Moslems, Bahai and Druze.

Built on three levels: Downtown (old city, port and coast), the middle city (Hadar HaCarmel) and the upper city (Carmel and Ahuza). The change of altitude over such a short distance is emphasized by the only subway of Israel, the Carmelit, which travels from almost sea level downtown, through the middle city to the Central Carmel (280 meters above sea level) in 6 minutes.

Attractions in Haifa:

  • Lovely beaches
  • Baha’i shrine and a few more institutions important for Baha’i faith. The shrine is a center of Baha’i religion. The monumental Baha’i terraces which descend MT. Carmel, is a very remarkable sight in Haifa. The area itself is full of nice cafes, restaurants and bars.
  • Stella Maris, One of well-known churches in Haifa. In the church yard, there is a monument to Napoleon’s soldiers.
  • Haifa cable car, next to the Stella Maris church. From there one descends directly to the beach, observing some of the downtown area through the cable car windows.
  • Haifa University is also worth visiting. The 27 storied University tower stands on one of the peaks of Carmel. The upper level is specially designed for panoramic views. The tower is the upper part of a big complex, which includes a good museum.
